Editor's Note

Along with the change of season, from summer to fall, comes a change in JV Views Editor, from Joan Lee to Kent Black.  Along with the rest of the PJVA Board of Directors I extend my thanks to Joan Lee for her stewardship of the Communications Portfolio wish her all the very best in her retirement.  As a new Director on the PJVA Board and as I take the reins of the PJVA website and JV Views, the monthly newsletter, I look forward to the challenge of making these communication tools more pertinent, informative and enjoyable for PJVA members.  Don’t be surprised if I contact you and ask for your input on ways that these tools can be expanded and improved.

After taking the summer off in July and August, PJVA was back in full swing in September.  Please read on for highlights of the Pub Night Networking event, the Mini Information Session on developing trust, a fascinating Lunch presentation on Increasing Your Professional Power, a seminar on Acquisitions and Divestitures, and the Early Morning Session on the new PJVA model Emulsion and Water Handling Agreement.

October promises to be just as busy and just as informative, starting with the monthly Luncheon on Oct 16 featuring Evan Baker of Cenovus Energy who will talk about the “Evolution of a Project Life Cycle Audit Program”.  Our seminar this month, on Oct 21, offers a step by step look at of Thirteenth Month Adjustments, complete with examples from simple to complex.  The Early Morning Session on Oct 29 has the staff of Burnet, Duckworth & Palmer LLP leading a review and discussion of the Statute of Limitations as it applies to joint venture agreements.  October wraps up with a Hallowe’en themed Pub Night Networking event on Oct 30 at Milestone’s on 8th Ave SW.  And don’t forget the PJVA / GPAC 21st Annual Joint Conference that takes place on Nov 6, 2014 at the Hyatt Regency Calgary.  This Year’s theme is “Connecting the Dots – The new Reality of Energy and Markets in Canada”.

Read through JV Views for all the details on these exciting events.

Marketing Team Request

What can the Petroleum Joint Venture Association (PJVA) do for you?

New for PJVA (the Association) in 2014 and 2015 is a Marketing Portfolio. The purpose of the Marketing Portfolio is to identify all of the great things the Association has and continues to do for its membership and to add any new THINGS that would further benefit the Association.

According to the Content Marketing Institute (Joe Pulizzi), a great team would consist of some or all of these types of members:

  • Chief Storyteller – molding the brand’s story
  • A Managing Editor – manages creation and collection of content
  • Content Producers – making content look good
  • Chief Listening Office – listens for conversation generated by your content.

As is the case with the Association, some volunteers will be needed to make a well-rounded effective team to deliver EMPOWERED NEW ASSOCIATION CONTENT (Marketing team).

Working closely with other Directors, the Marketing portfolio will assist in getting those portfolios and the Association’s message out to industry, and beyond. In essence, with a combined effort, we will build a JV Community which will elevate the Association’s visibility, membership and membership engagement in that community.

A call to arms!

The Marketing team, once assembled, will identify its objectives and put in place a plan to achieve those goals. PJVA will be omnipresent on social media in the days, weeks, and months to come and will consistently search for new ideas and paths to promote those ideas to both the Association’s membership and the general public.

Thanks to some very hard work in years past, information is available to be analyzed in regards to what the Association does for its membership and what the membership may want the Association to provide in the future. A SWOT (Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities and Threats) analysis has been done; education offering surveys have been conducted to determine what has been provided in the past and what may be needed in the future. There will be more of these conducted to zero in on some new strategies. The conclusion will be new inspiration, vision and growth for the Association and its membership!

Anyone interested in joining the PJVA Marketing Portfolio should contact Scott Wolfson – Director of Volunteerism for PJVA (swolfson@arcresources.com) or Connie Pruden at the PJVA office (pjva@pjva.ca).

September Luncheon Review – Dr. Jerry Teplitz, Increasing your Professional Power to New Levels of Excellence

PJVA’s September 18th luncheon featured Dr. Jerry Teplitz’s interesting and eye-opening presentation on the power of the mind. Demonstrating the link between the mind and body through pictures, music, books, medical studies, light, positive versus negative thoughts and even our meridian lines, Jerry revealed how our state of mind can affect us both physically and mentally.

Jerry explained that a day that’s dominated by negative thoughts requires three times more of our energy than a positive thought day, and this can have a significant effect on our productivity at work and our health at home. His advice? Try to ensure that at least the last four hours of each day are occupied by positive thinking and you will notice a profoundly positive effect on both body and mind.

The audience had the opportunity to witness the effects of positive and negative thinking first hand through a simple demonstration. Jerry pushed down on an individual’s extended arm while that person was thinking positive thoughts and then asked the person to think of a negative experience, while he applied the same pressure. On average, he explained, the individual’s arm goes down close to 60 per cent faster when he or she is preoccupied with negative thoughts, and it requires 17 per cent less pressure to do so. Many in the room were skeptical but Jerry used this technique in a number of scenarios, proving how consistently the body responds to various stimuli.

Jerry’s talk referenced many case studies and examples, but the key takeaway for all was that a positive outlook makes a big difference in your and everybody else’s day. We encourage you to visit www.teplitz.com for a copy of Jerry’s presentation.

Early Morning Session (“EMS”) – The 2014 Emulsion and Water Handling Agreement (“EWHA”)

Wednesday, September 24, 2014

The first EMS of the season was devoted to rolling out the new 2014 PJVA Model Emulsion and Water Handling Agreement (“EWHA”). Task Force members Marcel Savoie, Deidre Garyk and Tanis Kalynchuk (slide operator) shared with attendees their arduous 5 ½ year “journey” to develop this agreement for the benefit of the PJVA and its members. Using the current model Gas Handling Agreement format as a guideline, they reviewed each and every clause in the Effluent Processing and Water Handling Agreement model and either left the clause alone, revised or removed it. Significant additions to the EWHA include:

  1. provision for notices and communication via electronic means by providing a dedicated e-mail address;
  2. no specific definition of emulsion, rather, an all-encompassing definition of “Producer’s Inlet Substances” which includes oil, gas, water, BS&W;
  3. a simplified Assignment clause with no requirement for consent;
  4. updated audit provisions defining what can be audited in a fixed and variable fee structure; and
  5. new severability clause

Throughout the process the Task Force consulted with the Standing Committee and Director at Large Ashley Weldon to seek advice, guidance and approval. The first draft of the EWHA was completed in 2012 and, 2 years later, the PJVA Board approved the model for publication. The EWHA is available for download from the PJVA website, free of charge, until October 15th.

The next EMS will be held on Wednesday, October 29th, 2014 where we will “revisit” the Statute of Limitations.

Mini Info Session – September 16 Summary

On Tuesday, September 16th we had a Mini Information Session on Trust presented by Dr. Gary Lepine of Concord Professional Development Inc. Dr. Lepine explored the importance of building trust in the workplace and using trust as a foundation to better negotiations. The presentation was well attended and the feedback suggested that most attendees were able to take away skills that would help them build better working relationships based on trust.

October Luncheon Announcement

Please join us October 16 for an informative and educational luncheon titled:

“Evolution of a Project Life Cycle Audit Program”

Evan Baker, MSc, CEA and Group Lead of Regulatory Audit and Advisory at Cenovus Energy Inc. will outline the varying aspects of an audit program related to projects.

Environment, Health and Safety Audit Programs often focus on one stage of a company's activities - most often an operating facility.  In the oil and gas industry, there is a Project Life Cycle from greenfield through concept, geophysical, design, application & approvals, drilling, construction, operations, abandonment, decommissioning, reclamation and back to greenfield.  This presentation will focus on the design and some of the challenges and opportunities in moving from an operationally focused EHS audit program to a risk-based program that looks at the different life cycle stages.

Evan Baker has a Bachelor of Science and Master of Science in Geography from the University of Calgary granted in 1980 and 1985 respectively.  Over his career he has been involved in many aspects of environmental work, including soil surveys, environmental impact assessments, regulatory applications and management system development.

eStudies and Web Based Learning

PJVA is excited to offer customizable and accessible web-based learning options to industry professionals. PJVA has a suite of web based courses geared towards practicing and prospective JV professionals and personnel involved in the development and operation of a Joint Venture facility.

These courses, available via the eStudies link at www.pjva.ca, are a supplement to the Joint Venture Certificate Program offered through PJVA and Mount Royal University. The courses offered on eStudies are identical to the courses offered at Mount Royal, the only distinction being that the Mount Royal courses are applicable towards the Joint Venture Certificates while eStudies are not. As well, the eStudies courses are offered in segments such that the student can customize and streamline their learning experience.

eStudies courses include Joint Venture Agreements, with modules in Construction, Ownership and Operating Agreements, Unit Agreements, and Service Agreements, Joint Venture Administration as well as Joint Venture Analyst Levels 1 and 2. The Agreements courses offer excellent background knowledge to anyone who works with or is bound by a Joint Venture Agreement. Joint Venture Administration details exactly how work is to be conducted within the legal framework of Joint Venture agreements. The Analyst courses provide understanding of Joint Ventures techniques and processes.
