Editor's Note
The old saying goes ”March comes in like a lion and goes out like a lamb”. On the surface this seems reasonable – at the beginning of March it’s still winter (angry “lion” weather) and at the end of March it is officially spring (gentle “lamb” weather). There are many theories on the origin of this saying (biblical, astrological, folk lore…) but often it’s more of a nursery rhyme than a weather forecaster. But no would argue that this year the entire month of March was a “lamb”, bringing us some record high temperature days and, unfortunately for some, and early spring breakup.
PJVA has an exciting lineup of seminars and mini information sessions coming up in April and May, including:
- 13th Month Adjustments (Apr 21)
- Introduction to Unitization (Apr 28)
- Emerging Marketing Issues for JV (May 7)
- Land Agreements Overview (May 11)
- Midstream mini info session (May 26)
For further details, see this newsletter or go to the PJVA website “Events & Education”.
Also, be sure to read the article on the PJVA/AIPN Joint Seminar on the Unconventional Resources Operating Agreement (UROA) and follow the link to the presentation that was given at the seminar.
Mini Information Seminar – May 7th
Join us for a session on May 7th on the emerging marketing issues for JV. The processing and marketing businesses are becoming more complex, thus it is vital for the PJVA to be current in both the midstream and downstream aspects of our business.
This marketing seminar will provide an overview of what happens to products after the production and processing stages, including issues currently being addressed by PJVA members. Commercial arrangements for processing will continue to be driven by the traditional factors such as plant capacity, plant ownership, but producers need to be even more aware of:
- Downstream and Marketing aspects of the products
- Connectivity of plants and pipelines
- Transportation: capacity, firm service holders, infrastructure plans of the Transporters
- NGL fractionation space, capacity, firm service holders
- Netback price determinations and economic analysis
- Midstream companies leading the way in those areas where they have a geographical advantage
- Larger companies driving in those areas where they have a land and infrastructure advantage
- POP (Percentage of Proceeds) arrangements
Join us for an informative Marketing presentation.
Presenter: Sean Padley, Manager, Marketing and Joint Venture, Delphi Energy Corp.
Sean has been involved in various aspects of the oil and gas industry in Alberta for nearly 20 years. Initially focused on Joint Venture, in the past years Sean has also taken on responsibility for the marketing function. In his current position as Manager, Marketing and Joint Venture at Delphi Energy Corp. he is responsible for overseeing all aspects of the marketing of natural gas, NGL and oil products.
Early Morning Session - Wednesday, March 25th
The topic for discussion at the March 25th Early Morning Session was the Facilities 101 course currently in development for the PJVA Certificate Program, PJVA e-studies and the Education/Seminars portfolio.
Course designer Rein Evelein and Tracey Moore-Lewis, Director of PJVA’s Academic portfolio, were on hand to moderate the session. Tracey discussed the need for this course and Rein talked about how he got involved in developing it. The course will focus more on concepts – how they work, when you need them and why you need them, rather than the technical side of facilities and field operations. The intent is to give students a better conceptual understanding of what the facilities do and why.
The estimated 15 hour course will be part of the JV Analyst II Certificate at Mount Royal University, will be added to the PJVA e-studies program and will be developed into possible mini-seminars. The course is considered the missing link to the JV Certificate program.
Rein shared with the group his interesting idea for developing the course materials. He will book time with various industry experts and will videotape sessions with them. Afterwards, the sessions will be transcribed and incorporated into the course materials.
Rein and his group are targeting the course for advertisement in the fall 2015 MRU catalogue and to be online by January 2016.
March Luncheon Review – Strategies for Business Etiquette
PJVA’s March 19th luncheon featured Paulina Ponsford, a certified facilitator and founder of Open Communications Inc. Paulina spoke about business etiquette as one the most important assets professionals possess and shared key strategies for effective business etiquette.
In our work environment good business etiquette brings many benefits and can help us stand out as credible professionals. Paulina outlined three key areas to focus on, including creating good first impressions, effective communication and office etiquette.
To create a great first impression and build trust, Paulina suggested we consider our image (e.g. dress and grooming), handshakes and introductions. She used a number of humorous examples, the "claw" handshake for example, to illustrate the importance of these fundamentals when making a first impression. An important message here was that it is very difficult to bounce back from a bad first impression, so be sure to set a great one.
The segment on effective communication was illuminating as Paulina highlighted that 55 per cent of communication is non-verbal, 38 per cent is conveyed by the tone of our voice while only seven per cent is contained in our actual words. Hence, it is important to be alert, prepared, punctual and friendly, among key traits, to ensure the message we want to get across is received. Effective communication requires that we are constantly aware of the multiple ways we communicate with others and this also extends to our email and cell phone manners.
Paulina capped off her talk with a look at office etiquette, reminding us to be aware of our office manners in shared workspaces (e.g. keeping volume to a minimum, being mindful of scents, keeping desks tidy) and to ensure that we maintain a positive, professional and effective relationship with our co-workers. If you are having professional issues at work, she cautioned, it may be time to self assess to identify how to address the situation.
Following an engaging presentation, Paulina spent ample time on questions as the room was quite interested in the topic. If you would like additional information on the Business Etiquette presentation, you will be able to view the slide-deck on the PJVA website.
Our April 16 luncheon speaker will be Alishia Klein, Communications Coordinator, Public Affairs from Canadian Natural Resources Limited. Her topic will be: Knowledge is Power – Become a Proud Energy Citizen.

Joint AIPN Event March 16th
The AIPN Canada Chapter and PJVA (Petroleum Joint Venture Association) rolled out the new AIPN model form Unconventional Resources Operating Agreement (UROA) on March 16th. The global upstream oil and gas industry has experienced a transformation whereby unconventional resource plays (shale gas/oil in particular) have gained prominence and often compete favorably for capital with conventional projects. As the industry’s technical capabilities and commercial opportunities have evolved, the suite of agreements meant to set the ground rules and facilitate investment have similarly adapted. The UROA was developed to address the issues and challenges unique to unconventional resource projects. Further, many Canadian unconventional projects have been (and will continue to be) funded by international investors who have become familiar and comfortable with AIPN based agreements (such as the AIPN model form JOA). These same companies are typically much less familiar with the documents and practices that have developed over the years to become domestic Canadian industry standard.
Jay Todesco, one of the principal drafters of the UROA, outlined its key elements and the challenges it is intended to address. The presentation was followed by an interactive dialogue between the audience and panel members including Jim MacLean (CAPL), Paul de Villenfagne (PJVA), Kody Carroll (PASC) and Jay Todesco (AIPN) discussing their experiences and learnings in preparing contracts for unconventional resources plays, and how the UROA might be adapted for use in Canadian unconventional projects.
This was the first joint AIPN/PJVA event and given the success of this first event, more will certainly follow.
Visit our Model Agreements page to download the presentation.
