President's Message

Mike Taylor (2006-2007)

I was honored and pleased to take over as President of PJVA on July 1, succeeding Past Presidents Kimi Rutz, Ron Ramsay and Cheryl Pritchard whom I served under in the previous three years on the Board. Twenty-two years ago I had the opportunity to be involved with the formation of PJVA. Our discussions at that time revolved around the same need we see today that is captured in our simple mission statement, "to enhance the efficiency and effectiveness of petroleum joint venture relationships and activities". We have come a long way, but I see the need as great or greater than it was in 1985. All of our activities are directed at this mission.

For example:
  • Model agreements are intended to speed the process of getting agreements executed by limiting discussions over "boiler plate".
  • JP05 is accepted as a standard practice for both what the fee should be and how it is negotiated.
  • The JV Analyst and the JV Administrator Certificate programs now offered at Mt. Royal College provide education for those in these roles and entry into them where nothing existed before.
  • Our seminars continue to be sold out.
  • Our lunch meetings, social events and golf tournament are well attended and are great networking events.
The fourteen directors of the PJVA Board, many volunteers from our membership, and Connie Pruden at the Association office – all put in a tremendous effort at keeping the association running. I thank them for this dedication.

What has changed in twenty-two years, other than me being the greybeard rather than the young guy at the table? The background of those in the JV Rep role is more diverse than it ever was. Also, our membership is composed of not only those in the JV role but also landmen, accountants, technical people and business development individuals. This has put great pressure on our association to meet their diverse needs. There are several articles later in the newsletter addressing how we plan to go about this, but it boils down to education and mentorship.

I encourage all PJVA members to participate in our events and contribute to our initiatives. You will be better off for it and so will our industry.
