NETWORKING

Early Morning Sessions
Suma Mathew - Director, Education (General)

The Early Morning Sessions have been in full swing since the summer break. The sessions have been extremely well attended, and the participation has been great.

We began the sessions in September 2006 with a discussion on CO&O Agreement Issues (Silent Partner Rights and Obligations, Operator Indemnity, ROFRs and Assignment Issues). Linda Green did a great job of moderating this session.

The October Early Morning Session discussed Well Overhead and Administration Charges, with Ib Moller and Randy Tomilson lending their expertise to this topic. The discussion indicated that there were differing opinions among the membership regarding the basis for some of the fees applied, and the rationale for when these fees should be applied.

In November, Linda Green once again provided her extensive knowledge in discussing the new Gas Handling Agreement. The general consensus among most of the participants was that the new Gas Handling Agreement was well accepted in Industry, although several companies were making some modifications to tailor the agreement to meet company requirements.

The January 2007 session focussed on the many issues surrounding Abandonment and Reclamation Charges & the source of Abandonment and Reclamation Funds. This too, was a well attended and interesting discussion.

We have had several suggestions from members for future topics. These include Retroactive Effective Dates, Allocation Issues, CSO Agreements, Changes in the Statute of Limitations, Tie-In Agreements and Service Agreement Exhibit Revisions.

We wish to express our thanks to the EMS Committee. In particular, we wish to thank the membership for their participation and enthusiasm in making these sessions a success.

Petroleum Synergy Group Update
Paul de Villenfagne, Vice President

In the last issue of JVViews, there was a brief description of a new petroleum industry organization, the Petroleum Synergy Group (PSG). As outlined in that article, PSG is comprised of PJVA, CAPL, CAPLA, CAPPA and PASC. Over the past year, the PSG has met several times in order to identify and discuss how member associations might pool resources to enhance the education, development and influence of our individual members and associations. It is hoped that this will reduce duplication and maximize the “synergies” available through collaboration.

On October 17, 2006, board members from each of the PSG associations got together for a “meet and greet” session. At that session, the directors met their counterpart directors and discussed synergistic opportunities. This was the first broad based meeting that PSG has conducted! The first deliverable from the PSG is expected to be a coordination of the various associations’ events. The PSG is currently establishing a website that will provide a common link to announce luncheons, courses and workshops for the various associations. The website is expected to be up and running in the early part of 2007. Watch for it in the coming months.

Other areas currently being discussed include reciprocal access to training, shared online instruction capabilities and joint breakfast presentations. This organization is young with a lot to offer the industry. PJVA members can expect to see more about PSG in the upcoming months.

13th Annual PJVA/GPAC Joint Conference
Catch the Next Wave – Go Big or Go Home!
Oliver Wagner, Director - Conference

Our 13th Annual Conference was a great success, with 265 total in attendance (up from 249 in 2005 and 205 in 2004). I believe the success of our conference was attributed to the recruitment of excellent speakers who educated and informed our respective members. A special thank you to our speakers: Andrew Stephens, Roger Melley, Ron Deyholos, Tim Stauft, Carol Crowe, Bob Matwichuk, David Dachis and Blain Clark who graciously offered their time and energy to bring us informative, creative and compelling lectures. I would also like to acknowledge and congratulate the quality and commitment of our organizing committees. It is evident that volunteerism thrives in our association.

Of course, we must not forget to acknowledge our keynote speakers, Ruben Nelson and Zandra Bell. Ruben, with his opening remarks, reminded us all of our accountability and responsibility to develop and seek new fresh and powerful visions of what we can become in the next century. Not to be forgotten, our favorite socialite Zandra Bell, who left no stone unturned in ensuring we all got a good dose of humility and humor at the expense of ourselves. Thank you Zandra, for making us look interesting enough to laugh at!

One final and important thank you goes out to our conference organizer Amanda Barber from Capital Conferences Inc. who guided, organized and pushed the conference committee to ensure we all kept to our action items and promises. Stay tuned for details about the 2007 Annual Conference.

Proceedings from the 2006 Conference are available on the PJVA website for those who attended.

2006 Christmas Social
Joan Lee, Social Director

The 8th annual PJVA Christmas Social was held at the Calgary Petroleum Club on Wednesday, December 6th with a record 170 members and guests in attendance. Throughout the evening, the crowd savored cocktails, hors d’oeuvres, door prizes and holiday music by pianist Esther Schneider. The Christmas Social gives members an opportunity to exchange holiday greetings, renew old contacts and make new acquaintances as we usher out the old year. For all who attended, I hope you enjoyed yourselves and wish you the very best in 2007.

Many thanks to Connie Pruden with Associations Plus for her help in organizing this event. Our thanks also, to the two students, Lonnie and Hailey, who assisted Connie this year.
